Barbara Piasecka Johnson, whose rags-to-riches tale — an immigrant maid marries a multimillionaire and inherits all of his money, fending off the furious claims of his children — was at the center of what one writer called “the largest, costliest, ugliest, most spectacular and most conspicuous” probate battle in American history, died on Monday near Wroclaw, Poland, where she spent much of her childhood. She was 76.
Ricky Stachowicz, the general counsel for Mrs. Johnson’s family office, said she died after a long illness, which he did not specify.

WASHINGTON – TV ads show smiling seniors enjoying an “active” lifestyle on a motorized scooter, taking in the sights at the Grand Canyon, fishing on a pier and high-fiving their grandchildren at a baseball game.
The commercials, which promise freedom and independence to people with limited mobility, have driven the nearly $1 billion U.S. market for power wheelchairs and scooters. But the spots by the industry’s two leading companies, The Scooter Store and Hoveround, also have drawn scrutiny from doctors and lawmakers, who say they create the false impression that scooters are a convenient means of transportation rather than a medical necessity.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Talk about streaming media: The Philadelphia Phillies’ top minor league affiliate is set to debut what it calls a “urinal gaming system” at its ballpark in Allentown.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs tapped a British company to install the system in men’s restrooms at Coca-Cola Park.
It consists of a video display mounted above each urinal. When a fan approaches, the video console will sense his presence and switch into gaming mode. The guy aims left or right to control the play on the screen.

Europeans will have to prove they are “genuinely seeking employment” to claim UK jobless benefits for more than six months, David Cameron has said.
The prime minister said it was among measures to ensure people came to the UK “for the right reasons” after the UK became a “soft touch” under Labour.
He also announced private landlords would face fines if their tenants were found to be illegal immigrants.

Neanderthals, who are among our closest extinct relatives, died out about 35,000 years ago. The reasons why are much debated, and this study points to clues in the brain.
